Matcon Inc. Cone Valve Technology

MATCON specializes in providing solutions for handling powders, granules, tablets and other materials in Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs).We have delivered value to our customers since 1980, helping them to achieve: increased productivity, improved product quality, batch traceability, process efficiency, economic production.  MATCON has a World-Wide presence and customer base and the capability to provide total IBC solutions, from single component level through to complete turnkey powder handling solutions including formulation systems.

Matcon Inc. Services and Equipment Provided by BECO

MATCON provides systems based around intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) for batch powder processes.  MATCON does so with the following aims and goals:

  • Efficiency and Flexibility – With today’s harsh economic conditions, there has never been a greater importance placed upon production efficiency.  It is critical to remove waste and reduce costs, without compromising quality, to survive.  A lot of industries face the further challenges of needing to produce smaller amounts of a wider array of products.  In this environment, traditional processing solutions can be inefficient and wasteful.  Clients implement MATCON technology to improve quality, minimize lost product yield and reduce labor, as well as maintaining flexibility for future growth and expansion.

  • Solids Handling Expertise - Most container systems available in the marketplace only include a shut-off valve bolted to the container outlet; MATCON IBC systems incorporate Cone Valve Technology.  Each IBC has a ‘passive’ cone valve seated within the outlet of the bin.  When the IBC is located on the Discharge Station, a connection is made between the cone valve and an ‘active’ probe assembly.  This assembly is what lifts the cone valve in the IBC to discharge material.  This type of valve not only allows you to store material between process steps and automate material discharge, but it also provides complete and controlled discharge of material without the risk of segregation.  Click Here for a brochure, which further describes MATCON IBC technology.

MATCON also applies the principles of Cone Valve Technology in the form of integral valves that can be bolted to the outlet of silos and hoppers.  MATCON refer to these as Discharger Valves; click here for a brochure on this range of products.

  • Hygienic Systems (Containment) - One of the major design priorities for MATCON solutions is providing closed solutions for IBC filling and discharging.  Our clients rely on MATCON to do this for housekeeping, product contamination, operator safety and productivity reasons.

With these solutions, all of the IBC operations (filling, blending and discharging) can be done without the risk of product spillage or a dusty plant environment.  Furthermore, all of the equipment is designed for easy cleaning whether manually or with the use of automated MATCON washing equipment, in- place or out-of-place.

MATCON has recently done some significant work in areas where the powders being handled have extremely stringent requirements for maintaining purity; one example is oxygen sensitivity.

  • Turnkey Modules – The core of what MATCON now offers the industry in general is turnkey “modules” for formulation, mixing and packing.  All of these modules have key focuses on fast product change over, hygiene, simple installation and operator-friendly controls.  The results for our clients are higher quality products and better use of personnel.  These are as follows:

In-Bin Blending: By utilizing the MATCON blending approach click here for datasheet, a MATCON IBC is a detachable blending vessel.   What this means is that formulation (filling), emptying and cleaning of the blending vessel is done separately from the actual blender, minimizing blender down time.  This allows you to perform process steps simultaneously instead of sequentially; MATCON calls this approach Parallel Processing click here for more details.  Recently, MATCON has made substantial progress incorporating high shear and liquid additions, thus overcoming the traditional drawbacks to IBC in-bin blending.

Automated Packing Solutions: With the integration of load cells and MATCON proprietary software, the MATCON Discharge System can efficiently perform loss-in-weight or gain-in-weight batching without the use of a secondary device (i.e. a loss-in-weight screw feeder).  This development has allowed MATCON to provide some quick changeover packing solutions click here for more details.

Automated Recipe FormulationMATCON provides solutions for handling a wide range of ingredients that are too small in quantity for bulk handling such as major ingredients and  fixed silo systems.  MATCON solutions for the handling of minor and micro ingredients places the emphasis on efficiency, flexibility and hygiene.  MATCON calls their offering for minor ingredients Flexi-Batch click here for details;  The MATCON offering for micro ingredients is called Flexi-Batch Micro click here for details.

  • Practical Application of Lean Manufacturing Theory – Recently, at MATCON, we have been educating ourselves in Lean Manufacturing Theory.  This was prompted by the realization that many of the benefits of the MATCON solutions support these theories.  MATCON solutions can bridge the gaps between the theory of Lean Manufacturing and the practical application in the world of powder processing.  Click Here for a paper, which better describes how  MATCON can achieve this for you.
